Sometimes it’s hard to get your greens in, even for a brussels sprout lover like myself. This smoothie is the perfect solution! Spinach is the best green to add to smoothies in my opinion and won’t alter the taste of the smoothie like kale sometimes can (side note – try lacinato kale instead of regular curly kale). This smoothie is low in fat, high in protein, fiber and healthy carbs, the perfect post-workout fuel. Enjoy!
Jump to RecipeSpinach is loaded with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins! I am also obsessed with this new Antler Farms protein powder. The vanilla whey is creamy and smooth unlike chalky alternatives I had tried before. It blends so well in my yogurt parfaits too (recipe coming soon!). Dairy-free folks can substitute the recipe for a plant-based protein powder or collagen.
If you’re keto or low-carb, omit the frozen banana and add extra ice or a handful of frozen berries (the color might change from green). Also use extra flax in place of the oat bran and you can even try chia seeds too!
I love using oat bran and ground flax in my smoothies – both are high-fiber and super filling. And they also absorb water to give you a thicker smoothie texture. Did you know that flax is full of lignans, an anti-cancer compound? I try to fit them into my diet every day! Go for the ground flax always which are already broken up to give you easiest access to the nutrients and always refrigerate once you open the bag.
Why maca powder? Well, firstly I love the Navitas adaptogen blend which has Maca, Ashwagandha and Reishi mushroom (try saying that 10 times fast). Maca is energizing and mood-boosting. Ashwagandha has been shown to have metabolism enhancing effects (by supporting thyroid function). Together with reishi, both can also help with anxiety and feeling more balanced.
Lastly, cinnamon is a must in almost all of my sweet recipes! It can actually help make you more insulin sensitive (respond better to sugar and get it into your cells for fuel) which is great for those of us with prediabetes or diabetes. Enjoy!
